What are AI Agents?

For example, if a user wants to plan a surfing trip, the AI agent can check historical weather data, analyze tide patterns, and even consult a specialized surf forecast tool. By combining these insights, the agent makes a well-informed recommendation.

3. Learning and improvement

AI agents refine their approach over time. By storing past interactions in memory, they adapt to user preferences and improve their accuracy. They also use feedback, either from users or other AI agents, to refine their reasoning. This continuous learning process helps AI agents become more efficient and reliable.

AI agents: autonomous and task-driven

AI agents operate independently, making decisions and executing complex, multi-step tasks with minimal user input. They analyze goals, create plans, and adapt based on real-time data. AI agents can also learn from previous interactions, improving over time.

For example, an AI agent in a logistics system can optimize delivery routes by considering weather, traffic, and fuel costs, adjusting plans dynamically without human intervention.

AI assistants: user-centric and collaborative

AI assistants are designed to support users by understanding and responding to natural language inputs. Unlike fully autonomous AI agents, AI assistants collaborate with users, assisting with tasks but requiring user direction and decision-making. They can recommend actions, provide insights, and automate certain processes, but the user remains in control.

Chatbots: pre-defined and reactive

Chatbots are rule-based or AI-powered systems designed for simple interactions, such as answering frequently asked questions or handling customer service inquiries. More advanced AI chatbots use natural language processing (NLP) to understand user queries, but they still lack deep reasoning or the ability to plan ahead.

For example, a chatbot on an e-commerce website can assist with order tracking and FAQs but won’t autonomously resolve complex issues like supply chain disruptions.
